The Girl Scouts were founded by Juliette Gordon Low on March 12, 1912 when Low organized the first Girl Guide troop meeting of 18 girls at her home in Savannah, Georgia. Theodore Fremd was born in Germany coming to the United States as a young man. He established a meat market on Purchase Street in Rye in 1886 which he operated until 1946. He served as a trustee of the Village of Rye and its president from 1913-1926. He was a member of the Rye Board of Education from 1899 to 1938, serving as president much of the time.
